Men's Basketball Edged by Albertus Magnus, 76-74
The Dean College men's basketball team missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer as Albertus Magnus held on for a 76-74 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory Wednesday night in Pieri Gymnasium.
Dean (6-3, 1-1 GNAC) will conclude the first semester with a 3 p.m. GNAC home game against Johnson & Wales on Saturday. Albertus Magnus (1-5, 1-1 GNAC) continues a 3-game road trip with a 3 p.m. conference contest at Norwich on Saturday.
The Bulldogs trailed 76-70 with 2:21 left in the game when they slowly chipped away. A Dorien Ruffin (Pinetops, N.C.) layup cut the lead to four with 1:51 left before a pair of Mark Blair (Rosedale, N.Y.) free throws pulled Dean within a bucket with 49 seconds to play. On the ensuing Albertus Magnus possession, junior Jayden Madise (Palmdale, Calif.) forced a turnover to give the Bulldogs the ball with 20 ticks left. Blair got up a decent look from beyond the arc as time was expiring, but it hit the back rim.
Junior AJ Weston (Kansas City, Mo.) led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Junior Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas) posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Madise added 11 points, while junior Malik Spearman (St. Paul, Minn.) was the fourth Bulldog in double figures with 10 points.
Albertus Magnus received a game best 24 points from Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.). Junior Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) had 12 points and freshman Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.) contributed 10 both off the bench. Slade added seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.
The first half was tied at 28-28 with 5:29 left to go, before the Falcons used a 5-0 spurt in the next minute to take the lead. Dean later cut the deficit to a bucket, 38-36, with 2:14 on the clock. The visitors made a trey and a free throw and held Dean scoreless down the stretch to take a 42-36 lead into halftime.
Albertus Magnus used the long ball in the first half, making 7-of-20 attempts, while Dean shot 2-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs scored 18 points in the paint and made 8-of-12 free throws.
The Falcons scored 22 of their 34 points in the second half inside the painted area and did not make a three-pointer. Dean shot 48.4% from the floor to outscore the Falcons 38-34 in the second frame.
