Bulldogs Finish Game on 19-4 Run to Defeat Anna Maria, 75-60
The Dean College men's basketball team used a late spurt to put away Anna Maria, 75-60, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) battle Thursday evening.
Dean (12-6, 7-4 GNAC) will host Lasell on Saturday at 3 p.m. Anna Maria (4-14, 3-7 GNAC) travels to Emmanuel on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game with the Saints.
Dean junior AJ Weston (Kansas City, Mo.) led all players with 18 points. Junior Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas) posted his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds to go with three blocks and a couple of steals. Senior Mark Blair (Rosedale, N.Y.) tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Junior Malik Spearman (St. Paul, Minn.) added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior Jayden Madise (Palmdale, Calif.) finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Anna Maria was led by junior Gabe Armstead's (Dallas, Ga.) 12 points. Sophomore Trevian Grenon (Sutton, Mass.) scored 11 points off the bench. Sophomore Sean Zabari (Miami, Fla.) was the third AMCATS player in double figures with 10 points.
The Bulldogs began the game on an 8-0 run and controlled most of the action in the first half to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room. Dean scored 18 points in the paint and turned 10 Anna Maria miscues into 15 points. The home team shot 47.4% from the floor and held the visitors to 28.6%. Blair had nine points and Weston scored eight for Dean. Freshman Moussa Berete (Richmond, Va.) provided a lift off the Bulldogs bench to score seven of his season-high nine points in the first half.
Anna Maria turned things around in the second half, using the press to force 11 Dean turnovers. The AMCATS scored 20 points in the half off Bulldog miscues to chip away at the deficit. Anna Maria eventually tied the game at 56-56, on a pair of Zabari free throws, with 6:12 to play in the game. Dean responded with a pair of treys from Weston and Dorien Ruffin (Pinetops, N.C.) and never looked back. The Bulldogs ended the game with a 19-4 run en route to the 15-point victory.
