The New England Patriots are preparing for the 2026 free agency period with a focus on their linebacker group. The team’s internal free agent is Jack Gibbens, who is a restricted free agent (RFA). Other notable linebackers expected to be available on the market include Germaine Pratt, Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean, Quincy Williams, Devin Bush, Devin Lloyd, Kaden Elliss, and Alex Anzalone.
In 2025, the Patriots’ linebacker unit featured Robert Spillane, Jack Gibbens, Christian Elliss, and Jahlani Tavai. Spillane dealt with an ankle injury late in the season. Gibbens stepped up by taking over primary playcalling duties. Elliss continued to show improvement over his previous two seasons and contributed with his speed. Tavai provided size and flexibility by playing both inside and at the edge.
With Spillane, Elliss, and Tavai returning for another season, there does not appear to be an urgent need for major changes at linebacker through free agency. Retaining Gibbens is seen as a logical move due to his connection with head coach Mike Vrabel from their time together in Tennessee and his improved performance toward the end of last season and into the playoffs. The team must decide whether to place a tag on Gibbens or negotiate a multi-year contract.
There is also speculation about whether the Patriots could pursue a high-profile addition next to Spillane. Devin Lloyd and Nakobe Dean are among those entering their prime years while seeking significant contracts in free agency. Lloyd has been productive since entering the league in 2022 with five interceptions in 2025 and 436 total tackles overall. Dean had a strong 2024 season but was limited by injuries last year; however, he set a personal best with four sacks despite missing games.
Despite these options, it appears that other positions may take priority for New England during this free agency period. With several promising college prospects available in the upcoming draft class, addressing long-term needs at linebacker may be deferred until then—a strategy that aligns with how many teams approach defensive roster construction during free agency.
