New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media on December 23, 2025, providing updates on player injuries, team performance, and the outlook for the remainder of the season.

Vrabel stated that Milton Williams will begin practicing as he returns from injured reserve. “I think he’ll practice. I think we’ll start his window, see how he responds through the week of practice and go from there. I know he worked extremely hard, off with the strength and conditioning staff, with the training staff and involved in meetings. So, that’s really hard to do, is to be engaged in meetings when you know you’re not going to play and have some time. And so, appreciate what he’s done here, his leadership and his willingness to try to get back,” Vrabel said.

The coach also discussed the status of several players who left a recent game due to injury. He noted that some players are currently in concussion protocol: “Well, TreVeyon’s in it, Boutte’s in it and Jared Wilson is in the protocol.”

When asked about how players are coping at this point in the season after a series of injuries during a recent game, Vrabel emphasized ongoing evaluations and communication with medical staff. He explained that concussions can vary greatly by individual and there is no set timeline for return.

Vrabel reflected on player motivation late in the season: “It’s all these guys have ever known since the time that they started playing football. They wanted to be out there… You only get one opportunity a week. It means a lot to them.” He expressed appreciation for those making efforts to contribute despite physical setbacks.

Regarding defensive strategies over recent weeks using base personnel more frequently, Vrabel attributed this approach to opponent tactics: “That’s predicated on some of the things that they’re doing offensively and the personnel groupings that they are in.”

The Patriots currently hold a 12-3 record but had only two players named Pro Bowlers this year. Vrabel downplayed any disappointment about this outcome: “Nope. It does not at all.” He continued: “It says that we’re 12-3, and that we have two guys that the coaches, the fans and the players thought worthy enough to make the first ballot… We’re focused on wins… we’re chasing wins and not plays…”

With New England having clinched a playoff berth but still pursuing additional goals for their season finish—including remaining undefeated on road games—Vrabel commented: “Just unfinished business… We’ve got to focus on this week and going on the road to a great environment… unfinished business. We want to be undefeated on the road… Still want to play for the division. We want to win the division.”

Asked about receiver Mack Hollins’ progress as both blocker and pass catcher within their offense this year, Vrabel credited Hollins’ work ethic as well as coaching adjustments made by Todd Downing: “He works hard… he’s improved… Todd’s done a nice job with his skill set…”

On whether he pays attention now to other league results given playoff implications for seeding purposes, Vrabel replied: “I would say somewhat, slightly disinterested.”

Discussing individual contributions from Ben Brown—who has played multiple positions—and Elijah Ponder’s development since camp cutdowns earlier in 2025, Vrabel highlighted their adaptability and dedication.

Vrabel also addressed his decision-making process behind calling a fake punt during their last game—a play which was unsuccessful—and described it as an effort based on confidence built during practice sessions.

Finally, when questioned about adapting defensive schemes mid-game if opposing teams change quarterbacks unexpectedly due to injury or strategy shifts (as happened recently), Vrabel noted continuity often remains but praised players’ flexibility filling various roles quickly during games.
