New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media on December 17, 2025, discussing lessons learned from recent games and preparations for the upcoming matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

Vrabel emphasized that learning is a continuous process, not limited to a single game. “Well, I think that what we try to do is we learn from every game, every opportunity, not just specifically the Buffalo game. There’s a lot of instances throughout the year that we’ve learned from and last week’s game will be no different,” Vrabel said. He added that there are always decisions in each phase of the game—offense, defense, special teams—that coaches might want to reconsider after reviewing film.

Addressing questions about offensive play calling and quarterback Drake Maye’s deep throws on third-and-short situations, Vrabel explained: “No, I mean, we’re trying to score. We’re trying to do what we do best…if they give us an advantageous look, take a shot.” He noted the importance of staying on track offensively and having a solid plan for short-yardage situations.

When asked if a late-season loss could benefit the team in the long run, Vrabel responded: “I would say that’s TBD. I don’t know. It’s only depending on how you respond, how you prepare, how you practice and ultimately how you play.”

Vrabel also spoke about facing former player Derrick Henry and preparing for Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. On Henry: “It is a huge challenge. He’s a very unique player…He was very valuable…to our success in Tennessee.” Regarding Jackson’s abilities: “That’s kind of the mindset and what I see on tape. So, that’ll be a huge challenge…he’s comfortable standing there in the pocket, and then more than capable to extend plays when he feels like he has to.”

Discussing situational football against Baltimore’s aggressive style on fourth downs and two-minute drills, Vrabel said: “We always are kind of conscious…of when teams are kind of in that four-down area…we’ll have a plan for two-minute.”

On new addition Chad Muma: “I think he’s played in this league…Good speed, good ability to process and understand what’s going on. So, I think his experience helps…”

Vrabel acknowledged improvements in Baltimore’s defense over recent weeks: “Teams aren’t really running the ball on them…Really good mix of veteran players and some youth…Kyle Hamilton is one of the best players in this league just from a versatility standpoint…”

He also evaluated his team’s passing performance against man-to-man coverage: “Well, I think that there’s always opportunities for us to win in match coverage…those are at least two [plays], and I’m sure that there’s times we’re in match that we’re covered…”

Reflecting on defensive issues against Buffalo’s run game last week with James Cook III and Josh Allen gaining yards on the ground, Vrabel stated: “A lot of that is just they pushed a lot of scrimmage…Can’t let them run it in.”

Finally, regarding quarterback Drake Maye’s decision-making when extending plays with his legs as playoffs approach: “You would have to ask Drake. I don’t get to make those decisions…Being able to remain a passer and keep his eyes down the field…” Vrabel expressed hope that Maye continues developing this aspect while protecting himself physically.
